Dillinger steel, pillar of the energy transition
Borssele is an offshore wind farm in the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone in the North Sea, consisting of four sites (I, II, III & IV), each with about 350 MW, and a fifth small site (20 MW) for innovative demonstration purposes. The total Borssele area is thus designed for 1,500 MW. At the time of its commissioning in November 2020, the Borssele I & II site became the largest wind farm in the Netherlands to date and the second largest offshore wind farm in operation in the world.
The Borssele I and II wind farm is located about 22 km (14 mi) off the coast of the Dutch province of Zeeland. With a total capacity of 752 MW, its turbines are able to supply annually green electricity for one million Dutch households. They will also contribute to the decarbonization of coastal industries, for example by supplying renewable electricity to a new electrolysis plant that will provide hydrogen for carbon-neutral fertilizer production.
Extending over 128 km², the wind farm consists of 94 SG 8.0-167 DD turbines and an offshore substation. This is the first time that Siemens Gamesa's 8 MW offshore wind turbines have been used for a commercial project.
Their dimensions are impressive: they have a tip height of 200 m (656 ft) and a rotor diameter of 167 m (548 ft).
In water depths ranging between 14 m and 38 m (46 to 130 ft), they are based on monopile foundations with diameters up to 8.3 m, lengths up to 76 m and a weight of up to 1,188 t each.
For these monopile foundations, Dillinger supplied approx. 104,800 t of heavy plate in thicknesses from 30 to 108 mm.
In addition, further 3,700 t of Dillinger steel are used in the transformer station (Borssele Alpha) of this wind farm.
