Heavy plate for the Navigator Aries LPG carrier
Ice cold, but tough!
The Navigator Aries, a 160 meter long tanker with 20,600 cubic meters of capacity launched in 2008, transports liquefied gas from the Middle East to destinations around the globe for the British shipping line Zodiac Maritime. Conveyance of this hazardous cargo demands maximum safety, particularly in terms of the resistance to brittle fracture of the vessel's two payload tanks, which have to withstand product temperatures down to -50 °C. Dillinger supplied the special material for these tanks, more than 8,000 tonnes of thermomechanically rolled steel for low-temperature service with a verified Charpy impact strength down to -60 °C. In addition, the project has brought yet another unique distinction for the renowned German steelmaker: Naval Architect, the shipbuilding industry's specialist journal, has named the Navigator Aries 2008's ship of the year.
