The world's longest oil pipeline
It is nearly 1,800 kilometers in length and conveys - mainly underground - up to one million barrels daily of crude oil from the Caspian Sea, via Georgia, to Turkey. On its route, the Baku-Tiflis-Ceyhan, or BTC pipeline, for short, ascends to over 2,800 meters, traverses 1,500 chasms and waterways, three hundred roads and railroad lines and fourteen tectonic faults located in earthquake zones.
Last, but by no means least: it also conveys a sour-gas-containing fluid; the specification for the heavy plate used for fabrication of the pipes is, it need scarcely be said, correspondingly long. The material was supplied by Dillinger in close cooperation with the pipeline designers, with special solutions for the fault crossings.
