Exploitation in the Caspian Sea
The very fact that the field is named after a Kazakh poet hints at it - exploitation of the Kashagan oilfield in the Caspian Sea is a highly sensitive project. The field is located in the middle of a nature conservation zone in which more than two hundred endangered species have their habitat. Probably only the fact that this, with an estimated thirty billion barrels, is the second largest oil reserve in the world, resulted in the issue of a production permit at all. Even so, no other oil-recovery project is subject to such strict ecological surveillance. Production itself, furthermore, also presents a severe technological challenge; the oil is located extremely deep - four to five kilometers - below the seabed.
The presence of large quantities of hydrogen sulfide pressurizes the reserves, necessitating a special rig design. Extreme climatic conditions, with high winds and temperatures fluctuating between 40° C in summer and -30° C in winter, complicate construction and make enormous demands on the material used. The obtainment of heavy plate for construction from Dillinger was, therefore, a decision driven by safety concerns, one of them being the need for excellent and verified low-temperature toughness.
