As part of a program for accelerated growth, the brasilian Government plans the construction of several mega-dams for the sustainable production of energy.
One of these projects is the Santo-Antônio-dam (Usina Hidrelétrica Santo Antônio), a dam under construction with a hydropower station located at the Rio Madeira river in the brasilian state of Rondônia. Santo Antônio is in operation since the installation of the turbines in 2011; completion is scheduled for 2015. Construction costs are estimated 7 Billion US-$ including ship water-gates, feed contacts and environmental protection measures. The station has four sets of bulb turbines each with 44 pieces, each of which has an effective output of 71.6 MW, totalling 3,150.4 MW. The plant operator is Santo Antônio Energia. Once completed the station will produce energy for the supply of 11 million Brasilians (average consumption); this corresponds to the entire population of the city of São Paulo. For such a sophisticated project, demands on the applied steels are very high. So the choice of the steel supplier came to Dillinger: we supplied 5,865 t of plates in the steel grades S235 and S355 up to 150 mm in thickness to several customers. Moreover our Heavy Fabrication Division supplied rings, ring segments, shells and mulit-piece heads.
