29. April 2008
Some two hundred experts from the global oil and gas industry, along with representatives of engineering consultancies, shipyards and steel users, attended Dillinger Hütte's first "International Offshore Colloquium" from April 28 to 30, 2008.
The focus of the event was on the interchange of information on and experience with the latest developments, from the viewpoint of the energy and materials suppliers. The most recent trends and developments were reported and discussed both in the context of plenum addresses and in workgroups. Dillinger Hütte, as a supplier of heavy plate, has held a key position in the international offshore industry for many decades. More than two thirds of the company's plate production are for sectors involved in energy recovery and distribution. "The energy sector is booming, and is generating great demand for our high-quality heavy-plate products for use in the construction of oil and gas pipelines, and of offshore structures and equipment" commented Dr. Belche, Chairman of the Dillinger Hütte Board of Management. "As a dependable partner for our customers, we constantly seek continuous contact with this industry, in order, on the one hand, to keep up at all times with the most recent technological developments and, on the other hand, to ensure that engineers are informed on Dillinger Hütte's latest developments in ultra-modern steels", he added. The world's hunger for energy and the resultant necessity of developing new reserves and, increasingly, rendering renewable energy sources usable, confront the partners in the manufacturing chain with ever new challenges. New reserves are becoming noticeably more and more difficult to develop, and the demands made on prospecting, exploration and production technologies are becoming ever greater and ever more extreme, in order to achieve success in projects conducted in the deep oceans, under arctic conditions, and with ever more aggressive fluids and media. Dillinger Hütte supplies for these applications highly sophisticated steel plate which is used in pipelines, drilling rigs, chemical processing equipment and, not least of all, in the support towers of offshore wind-energy farms. The company has supplied its products, for example, for the Langeled Pipeline from Norway to the United Kingdom, which was commissioned in 2007 and is, at 1200 km, the world's longest underwater pipeline, for the important Horns Rev offshore wind-energy farm off the Danish coast, and for the planned Nord Stream large-scale pipeline project through the Baltic Sea.
