Dillinger steel played a decisive role in today’s opening of the new Gotthard Railway Tunnel – at 57 kilometers, the longest transport tunnel in the world and one of the most complex construction projects of our time.
The four tunnel boring machines used in constructing the gigantic tunnel are the most powerful in the world – and all contain Dillinger steel. These “giant moles” made of steel, affectionately nicknamed “Heidi,” “Sissi” and “Gabi” (I and II), weigh in at 3,000 tons each and measure 400 meters long, with a maximum bore diameter of up to 9.58 meters and power output of 3,500 kW (8,500 kNm of torque). Dillinger supplied around 2,100 tons of heavy plate steel in thicknesses up to 200 mm for construction of the gigantic tunnel boring machines.
Innovative top-quality steel products, total orientation around our customers' needs and unceasing technological development in close cooperation with our partners form the basis of our success - as they have for more than 333 years.
