What makes steel green?
Steel processors are currently asking themselves these questions.
Andreas Thieme, Marketing Business Development Green Steel at Dillinger, showed how CO2 can be saved in steel production, how this is measured and certified and how green steel can be defined in the future at a lecture event held by the SLV welding technology training and testing institutes in Mannheim and Saarbrücken on 24 January. This was an opportunity to explain how Dillinger and Saarstahl are transforming their production towards climate neutrality with PureSteel+ and will drastically reduce CO2 emissions as early as 2027.
Dillinger wants to make the world more sustainable: for many years now, our heavy plate products, e.g. for offshore wind projects or hydroelectric power plants, have enabled the generation of renewable energy. Dillinger's comprehensive sustainability management is characterised by the numerous environmental certificates and the detailed explanation of the carbon footprints.
With PureSteel+, we are now establishing a production process that is as sustainable as possible and manufacturing the most sustainable products possible from green steel. This is based on a two-stage plan with the aim of being able to supply our customers with green steel in 2027/28. The conversion of 70% of production capacity in one step and a reduction in pig iron production will ensure a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.
Production should be climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest. With this largest transformation project for green steel in Europe, the Saarland steel industry is taking on a pioneering role as a technology leader and innovation driver for climate-friendly steel production and for the regional hydrogen economy.
Innovative top-quality steel products, total orientation around our customers' needs and unceasing technological development in close cooperation with our partners form the basis of our success - as they have for more than 333 years.
