26. March 2010
Dillinger Hütte's employees did not need to think twice when the company's management and supervisory boards appealed to them in February for a donation campaign to help the victims of the earthquake disaster in the Caribbean - they responded immediately and with their usual enthusiasm; under the motto of "We from Dillinger Hütte can help - an hour of work for people in need", they donated working hours from their flextime and vacation accounts, quickly accumulating the very respectable total of no less than 104,879 euro.
SHS - Struktur-Holding-Stahl, Dillinger Hütte's largest shareholder, then added its own contribution, doubling the overall donation to 209,758 euro. The cheque for this amount is to be handed over today by Dillinger Hütte employees, at a small ceremony attended by Dr. Karlheinz Blessing, representing SHS and the Board of Management of Dillinger Hütte, and Roman Selgrath, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. The immediate recipient will be the "Alliance Development Works" (Bündnis Entwicklung hilft) umbrella organization for development and emergency-assistance services, represented by Andreas Lohmann, of the Misereor anti-poverty campaign. Alliance Development Works, which cooperates closely with Germany's ARD publicly operated television channel, also represents the "Bread for the World" (Brot für die Welt), Medico International, Terre des Hommes and Welthungerhilfe campaigns, in addition to Misereor. Under the Alliance Development Works banner, these organizations provide on-the-spot help in case of natural disasters, and in other crisis-hit areas, as in the case, for instance, of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti. Their work is aimed both at relieving acute and immediate need, and achieving long-term change. The alliance members cooperate closely with local partner organizations at achieving these objectives. All donations are passed on 100 % - no administrative costs are charged - to the members and partners of the alliance. Following the successful collection campaigns for the flood victims in Eastern Germany in 2002, and for the victims of the Asian tsunami in 2005, the Dillinger Hütte workforce has now, for the third time in a row, mounted a major donation campaign to demonstrate its solidarity with disaster victims - pleasing evidence that the sense of global belonging at "us Hütt", as the Dillinger Hütte plant is dubbed by its employees, extends well beyond regional, state and even continental boundaries. Dillinger Hütte's 100 % subsidiary, GTS Industries, of Dunkirk, France, is again also participating in the campaign, with its own, still ongoing, appeal for donations within the Dunkirk plant. The Board of Management and Supervisory Board take this opportunity of expressing to all the company's employees their appreciation of these generous donations and of the solidarity shown with their fellow humans now suffering need as a result of this devastating earthquake.
